Mermaid Inspired Little Girls Room

Please, come in. Ha, ha! The moment I knew I was having a little girl, I knew exactly what her room would look like. You see, I always shared a room with my little sister. I never had a space that was “mine” which is very typical in New York. Apartments were on the small size and my parents had 2 girls who can share a room. When the doctor said it was a girl, I was jumping for joy. I was going to have a little princess! A princess who I can play dress up with (don’t judge!), watch Disney Princess movies with, and get mani/pedis with – she was everything I wanted. Coming up with a theme for her room was pretty easy – I knew I didn’t want it to be too “character-y” (probably not a word but I hope I make sense). I knew I wanted gold, pinks, and teals. I also knew I wanted mermaids.

I’ve always loved mermaids. My favorite Disney princess is Ariel. Hands down! When I go to Disney World – I wear Ariel t-shirts. I wanted to incorporate the mermaid/under the sea into the color scheme that I had in my mind. I searched Etsy for the perfect print – a mommy Mermaid with her mermaid babies. It was a big part of my inspiration. I was very lucky that this season, there was nautical everything. I probably visited HomeGoods a few times a week! Many of the accents are from HomeGoods.

I ♥ the gold heart decals. They were very easy to work with and are totally removable but it takes some serious patience to get those hearts straight! Trust me they are not perfect but I did them all by myself! So I am proud and LOVE it. The mermaid is amazing. I painted it a beautiful teal color as it was a distressed white originally. I wanted to bring out the teal more since there was a lot of pink and gold going on. The wall is big so I may add more pieces later on. The cute little arrow is Heidi Swapp Marquee kit! I did it was gold washi tape and glitter! Love it! It is the perfect little night light for Ciara.

I painted the back of the Ikea Billy bookcase with chalk paint. I really wanted it to look like the ocean. The chalky paint really accomplished that. I was a little worried when I first started using the paint as it left a lot of streaks. I had to use trial and error when it came to figuring out what to use for painting it. I started with a foam roller then a paint brush, and finally settled on a foam brush. After 3 coats, it looked great!

I accessorized the bookcase with gold accents that I found in H&M, Michael’s, and HomeGoods. I also added photos that I know she would love looking at. Her little kid-friendly nail polishes are kept tidy in a little jar. My daughter loves putting on necklaces so I put them in a tray she can easily reach.

The opposite side of the room is her closet and a narrow wall that is next to the door. I added some colorful canvas prints that I found in Target. I also added two gold butterfly hooks for her little dress-up costumes. The girl changes about 5x a day! Typical girl, right?

My daughter loves Disney Frozen, she has been begging me to put her new upholstered chair in her room. I didn’t want to put it until the room was complete. The upholstered chair is from Delta Kids. It is adorable! It had a nice comfy plush seat with a sturdy hardwood frame. She loves it so much that she is not letting anyone, and I mean anyone sit on it but her. Saying, “MY princess chair”. Yup, she’s a feisty one!

Finding the mermaid bed sheets was the best thing ever! I really, really did not want to pay the expensive prices of Pottery Barn Kids for their mermaid sheet set. Got those super adorable sheets at HomeGoods, they are by Cynthia Rowley. It was love at first sight! I love everything about it.

I can definitely do a product list of anything in the room. If you want to know the paint color or what chalk paint brand I used please let me know and I’ll do a separate post with the break down. I hope you enjoy her room makeover as much as I do! She is one happy little girl right now. I do have a few more elements I want to add to her dresser and I will be sure to update you with the additions.

Now tell me what is your favorite part?

Disclosure: I received the Frozen Upholstered chair and the sign in her door for the purpose of inclusion in a post. As always all opinions stated here are my own.

That is adorable! I didn’t know ahead of time that I was having a girl, but when Molly was one I did her room in Cinderella 🙂 We moms pass our love of girly to our girls!

The cool thing about a more ‘generic” mermaid theme is that as she gets older, it’s a natural transition to something more grown up, like nautical/beach kind of thing.
