You’ve probably heard of Skylanders (Activision) if you have a school-age boy. They are all the rage with the little youngsters and it is no surprise as it is a video game available on pretty much every system – Wii, PS3, Nintendo 3DS, Xbox, and even the computer. The video game is entertaining and keeps the kids engaged with the different Skylanders. My son and I got to review the Skylanders Swap Force, the latest video game from the Skylanders series.
Skylanders SWAP Force is the sequel to Skylanders Giants and Skylanders Spyro’s Adventure—the critically acclaimed games where toys come to life! In Skylanders SWAP Force, the rich mythology of Skylands continues, engaging audiences with the innovative SWAP Force Skylanders, an all-new story, new puzzles to solve, and new discoveries that will fire the imagination.
The new Skylanders Swap Force is different than the prior games in that it allows the characters to be “swapped”. There are special characters that have removable parts which allows you to turn one character into another. For example, one character is called “Blast Zone” but when half of his body is added to Wash Buckler – the character becomes Wash Zone. A different character that has different powers now. Each Skylanders character has an element – Fire, Water, Earth, Life, Air, Tech, Magic, and Undead. Each of the characters with these elements have different powers – based on the scenario on the video game you may need a certain character with a specific element.
If your child has Skylanders from previous games, they may still be able to use them in the latest Swap Force game. I really like that the characters are able to work with the new game. My son has quite the collection of Skylanders and loves getting new ones. He had the Starter kit from the last Skylanders and we were able to use some of the same characters in Swap Force.
The Swap Force starter kit comes with everything you need to start playing. It comes with the video game, The Portal of Power, two Swap Force Skylanders plus a series three Skylanders, three secret codes (to unlock characters in the mobile game), three collectible trading cards, and collector’s poster.
The Skylanders games allows for multiple players. I take the opportunity to bond and spend time with my son. I only allow him to play on weekends so on Saturday mornings after breakfast we’ll play for a little while. It helps him learn teamwork, strategy, and problem solving. I am OK with video games as long as it is in moderation and it also has to be age appropriate.
A new game in the Skylanders series will be released October 5th, 2014. Skylanders Trap Team will feature new characters, the Traptanium (which brings character to life with audio), players can know play as a Skylander or villain, and much more! My son is very excited to play another adventure with his beloved Skylanders.
